Brightlingsea Regent boarded the coach and made the trip to Histon where they entertained Cambridge City.
Rothery was without skipper Matt Cripps who has been sidelined for a few weeks, there are also long term injuries to Griggs & Maybanks meaning they remained absent. Milo Grimes came in at the back and Matt Baxter made his first start of the season.
The R’s started the game positively with a couple of shots early on, Billy Hunt flashed wide and Matt Baxter found the City Goalkeeper from distance.
But it was the host who opened the scoring, when a cross from deep found the head of James Hall to score past Bradbrook! 1-0
Regent responded with an equaliser 5 Minutes later. Jake Gould with lovely play down the left, getting a low cross in towards the box with Matt Baxter running on to fire into the top of the net! 1-1. Two goals in as many games for Bax!
The half remained fairly level although the hosts had created a few more half chances.
Cambridge City came out for the second half and attacked Regent straight away. After just two minutes they were back in front. James Hall forced a good save from James Bradbrook, but the ball was returned into the box for Ryan Sharman to head home at the back post! 1-2
The R’s had introduced Jake Clowsley at half time and he made an immediate impact! Harvey Hodd won the ball in Midfield driving forward he picked out the run of Clowsley on the left who latched onto the ball slotting past the oncoming goalkeeper! 2-2
On the hour mark, the R’s took the lead when a Jake Turner freekick on the left hand side of the box was centred. With the ball eventually falling at Billy Hunts feet for him to slam Home! 2-3
Both sides continued to create chances and there was some end to end stuff until Regent were awarded a penalty with 10 Minutes remaining. A corner on the right was put in the danger zone and Josh Gould was held back by a City defender. Billy Hunt stepped up and added his second! 2-4
After the penalty was converted there seemed to be an incident off the ball, and Gent of Cambridge City was shown a straight Red!
This never hampered the Host having a late flurry, in the 89th Minute, the Ref evened the Penalty count when a City corner was put in deep and headed back into area, as Jake Gould and the attacker jumped it appeared to have struck Jake’s hand! Ryan Sharman stepped up and converted. 4-3
Then, moments later, the R’s got a huge let off when a cross down the left almost picked out Sharman but this went just behind to incoming striker, and the ball was cleared to safety!
At the other end, Amar Lewis was tee’d up by Jake Clowsley but his effort went over the bar from close range.
The match finally finished with The R’s holding on and advancing to the 2nd Qualifying Round for the first ever time!
The draw for the next round was made today, with The R’s travelling to Bostik opposition Egham Town in the next round on Saturday 22nd September.
