Tuesday night saw the R’s travel down to Canvey Island for our first away day of the 2026/27 Isthmian League North Season. The squad were fired up to go and backed by a sizeable Regent contingent of supporters who were in full voice in the build-up situated in the stand next to the Regent dugout.
Regent got the game underway and dominated the midfield in the opening minutes with good possession and passing play. Harry McDonald won the first free kick of the game on the edge of the Canvey box on 3’ minutes which was sent into the area but cleared by the Canvey defence. Marley Andrews sent the ball back into the area with Jake Clowsley going to win the ball from a header but ended up clashing awkwardly with the Canvey Goalkeeper with the latter getting his foot stuck under the metal fencing, prompting the surrounding supporters and players to assist with pulling said fence up to free the keeper’s foot. Thankfully, no serious injuries were sustained to the keeper!
Regent created chances in the first 22 minutes, winning several free kicks and a few shots aimed at goal however the first big chance of the game came on 22 minutes when Canvey captain Elliott Ronto sent a dangerous cross into the Regent penalty area which found a Canvey head unmarked with the resulting header going inches wide of the goal. Regent had a massive chance of their own almost 10 minutes later. Regent won a free kick on 30 yards and Charlie Collis stepped up to take it with his curling effort ricocheting off the post having well beaten the Canvey keeper.
Regent continued to dominate the half with several good chances to go in at the break ahead, with one shot beating the keeper and being cleared off the line by the Canvey defence. At half-time the scores we’re level on 0-0.
No changes were made at Half time and Canvey got the second half underway. A much more even affair between the two sides with both having further chances to take the lead, but it was Regent who finally broke the deadlock on 61’ Minutes when Luca Terminiello won the ball after a well-timed tackle with Marley Andrews sending the ball up the Canvey half back to Luca who crossed into Mekhi McKenzie to stab home the opener and his first goal in a Regent shirt. Much to the jubilation of the travelling Regent support who had not stopped singing all game at this point.
After the goal Canvey appeared to shift a gear and started to create more chances and keep hold of more of the ball. They’re persistence and patience with a solid and unified Regent defence paid off on 84’ Minutes, when Marley Andrews went down in the Regent half seemingly after being fouled (Of which the ref waved play on) the Canvey attack led by Conor Hubble laid off George Scales who took a shot at a tight angle only for the shot to go break through the Regent back line and bounce into the net off Matt Tricker.
A very unlucky and harsh goal to concede after what had been an outstanding defensive display from the Regent back line with Roan Tucker pulling off some outstanding diving and point blank saves throughout the game, however, with both sides failing to find a winner in the final minutes of the game the ref blew for full time and the points were shared.
A second draw in a row for the R’s and a point away from home against a team dubbed one of the favourites for promotion this year. An all round solid performance and one filled with many positives and to build on as we now travel to Little Oakley on Tuesday night (25th August).
A special mention to the Regent support Tuesday night, who did not stop singing and chanting throughout the entire game. Your passion and energy was our 12th man on the pitch Tuesday night and we can’t wait to see it all again this coming Tuesday!!
