Brightlingsea Regent’s final home game of the season against Takeley will be a special occasion for many reasons—but few stories will be as inspiring as that of supporter Rob, who is set to arrive at North Road in truly unforgettable fashion.
This Saturday, Rob won’t be travelling by car, coach, or train. Instead, he’ll be taking on an incredible 117-mile cycle from his home in Sussex, all to support a cause very close to his heart.
“I’ll be donning my lycra and cycling all the way from my home to North Road,” Rob explained. “It’s just over 117 miles in total. Annoyingly, it’s a longer ride than drive as I can’t cycle through the Dartford Tunnel (stupid rule!!!), so I have to go through central London, over London Bridge, then turn right all the way to Brightlingsea.”
It’s going to be a long day in the saddle, but hopefully I’ll make it to North Road with enough time to enjoy the build-up and soak in the atmosphere.
The ride is being undertaken in memory of Rob’s best friend, Graham, a fellow founder of The R's Sussex Supporters Branch, who sadly passed away last July after a long battle with cancer.
“In July last year I lost my best mate… Graham,” Rob said. “The Royal Marsden, in particular the Oak Foundation Development Unit, did so much for him. They not only work tirelessly to find a cure for this horrible disease but are the most amazing people.”
Rob’s ride is both a tribute and a mission to honour Graham’s memory while raising vital funds and awareness for the Royal Marsden Charity.
“I’ll be doing this bike ride to not only honour my best mate but to raise money and awareness for this amazing charity. Hopefully we can create a bit of a legacy for Graham.”
Rob has been raising funds throughout his training via his JustGiving page, and the Regent family has already shown incredible support.
“Several of you wonderful people in Brightlingsea have already sponsored me,” Rob said. “It will be amazing if we can raise more funds for the Royal Marsden Charity. I believe there will also be a collection made on the day at the ground.”
If you’d like to support Rob and help him reach his fundraising target, you can donate here:

He added: “I’ve been so touched by all your support. This is exactly why Graham and I fell in love with this fine club.”
Supporters attending Saturday’s match will have the chance to cheer Rob across the finish line at North Road and contribute to a truly meaningful cause. Rob is hoping to arrive at North Road between 2pm and 2:30pm.
Whether it’s through donating online, giving in the matchday collection, or simply offering encouragement, every bit of support will help make a difference.
Let’s give our friend Rob the welcome he deserves and help him honour Graham in the best possible way.
Up the R’s.
