League Update, Bulletin #25

Weekly Bulletin Season 2013-14

Bulletin No 25
February 1st 2014

FELIXSTOWE AND WALTON UP TO SECOND

On another Saturday bedevilled by waterlogged pitches Felixstowe and Walton United had a tremendous 2-1 win at Gorleston to move up to the heady heights of second in the Premier Division table. Christy Finch cancelled out Ben Cranfield’s 11th minute penalty before Miles Powell put the Seasiders back in front with his 71st minute winner. Felixstowe have now taken 19 points from their last 7 matches.

Brightlingsea Regent played their first away league game since November 2nd and came away from Norwich United with a 3-1 success. All the goals came in the first half with Regent’s goals coming from Terry Rymer (2) and Scott Yearling (penalty). The Essex side have 9 games in hand on leaders Hadleigh United and if they were to win all of them would overtake the Brettsiders. Brightlingsea’s only two league defeats this season have been to Hadleigh.

In the local derby featuring teams near to the bottom of the Premier Division table Thetford Town completed a double over Diss Town with a single goal victory. The attendance of 122 was Thetford’s best league crowd of the season.

Only one match beat the weather in the First Division and it was an excellent first game in charge for new Downham Town Manager Mark Reeve. He watched his side move off the bottom of the First Division with a 3-0 home success over Long Melford.

ELY CITY INTO LAST FOUR OF LEAGUE CHALLENGE CUP

It has not been the best of seasons for Ely City but an Andrew Claydon goal on Tuesday evening at one of his former clubs, Norwich United, was enough to put the Robins through to the semi-finals of the Red Insure Cup.

The other three quarter finals were all postponed because of waterlogged pitches.

RESCHEDULING OF POSTPONED MATCHES

With the recent spate of postponements it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid some unwelcome long distance midweek journeys. Fixture Secretary David Mayes will do his best to keep these to a minimum but it may involve moving the dates of some already scheduled matches.
LAST SEASON FOR CRC

CRC will be leaving the Thurlow Nunn League at the end of the current season after a decision by Cambridge United to disband the club following a review of its development strategy. Director of Football Jez George said it had been a tough call to resign from the Thurlow Nunn League given that the likes of Luke Berry and Josh Coulson had cut their teeth with CRC.

Jez went on, “I can’t speak highly enough of the league. We knew we were a bit of an anomaly, but they’ve been first class and there are over 100 young players playing football at different levels who have been developed in that league. It’s nothing to do with the division, but the evolution of the youth programme and we need to move with it.”

CRC have played in the Premier Division since taking over from Cambridge City Reserves for the 2006-07 season and have been a credit both with the quality of their football and their standards of administration. They had their most successful seasons in 2008-09, when they were runners-up to Lowestoft Town, and in 2009-10 when they missed out on the title to Needham Market by a single point.

The CRC side that finished League Runners-up in 2009-10

POSTPONED MATCH CONTACT

Clubs are reminded that they are expected to make telephone contact with their Match Officials should a fixture be postponed on the day of the match. Email or text contact is not sufficient.
