Brightlingsea Regent welcomed newly promoted Haringey Borough to the Taydal Stadium for our season opener on home soil.

Boss Rothery named an unchanged team from Saturday’s victory at Kingstonian, with absentee Jake Turner returning to the bench.

The visitors made the first impact on the match, as they possessed a front three with pace and power. After around 13 minutes, Goalkeeper James Bradbrook was called into action and produced a marvellous save low to his right from a shot from outside the box by Georgios Aresti.

Shortly after, another let off for R’s when rapid winger Chinedu McKenzie got beyond Jake Gould to cut back for Joel Nouble who’s effort was lashed over.

Regent did however react and began to get into the game with a couple of half chances, the most notable was from Amar Lewis. After making a strong tackle in midfield he got himself forward down the right, taking a shot on the angle just over the bar.

As the game advanced towards halftime the visitors were awarded a penalty. George Keys looked like he was fouled as he was defending against the tall Joel Nouble, after getting goal side, Keys went down and the Referee awards the penalty as he landed on the ball with his hands. Nouble stepped up and converted! 0-1HT

Rothery introduced Turner at the break as the R’s looked to get back on parity.

Almost immediately Turner was close to making the difference. A fine double save by the Haringey stopper, Valery Pajetat spoilt an equaliser, firstly Regent were awarded a freekick on the edge of the box. Jake Turner’s shot low forced the first and as the rebound came out he then denied Alex Taylor with great reactions!

On the hour mark, Haringey doubled their lead. A counter attack got the visitors in down the R’s left-hand side, Michael Ademiluyi received the ball after Regent failed to clear inside the area, he moved the ball onto his left foot and rifled a strike into the top corner of the net, giving Bradbrook no chance. 0-2

Borough made changes to sure up their defence to stop R’s getting back into the game.

The final chance of any note was by Billy Hunt, a good switch ball out wide to Harvey Hodd, he went by his man and centred, Hunt picked it up and made an angle for his shot but this struck the post and went out for a goal kick

Borough managed the remaining time which saw them take their first victory in the Bostik Premier League.

The R’s will now need to pick themselves up as they host Margate at the Taydal on Saturday afternoon.
