Brightlingsea Regent lose 2-1 to league leaders Dulwich Hamlet despite a spirited second half performance.

Brightlingsea Regent players and supporters boarded the bus and made their way south of London to take on Dulwich Hamlet.

This was a game that had some doubts over being played as 24 hours before the ground owners ‘Meadows’ had threatened to lock the doors, thankfully this was resolved in time and the stadium was filled with a fantastic 1,828 Supporters in Attendance.

The match started with both teams sizing each other out, Regent were happy to sit tight and shut down the hosts space making the game hard work for Dulwich.

On the half hour mark, the deadlock was broken. A corner kick from Dulwich was met with the head of Mark Weatherstone which was adjudged to have struck the hand of Matt Cripps. A penalty was awarded by the referee and Ashley Carew blasted Home. 1-0

Just 4 minutes later, Dulwich doubles their lead. With Regent still seething from the earlier decision, Reise Allasani of Dulwich was allowed space to turn and lose his marker 35 yards from goal, he then accelerated away from the Regent defence and struck a low shot past Harry Palmer! 2-0.

At this point, Dulwich Hamlet were in complete control of the game and continued to create chances. But it was the R’s who managed to pull one back on the stroke of half-time. Ricky Griggs was able to turnover possession on the right flank, he then drove at the defenders cutting inside and striking at goal from 25 yards, past Preston Edwards and into the net. HT 2-1

Tom Rothery made changes at the break, introducing Phil Kelly and Harry McDonald, replacing both wide men Aaron Condon and Sam Ashford.

This certainly gave the R’s more attacking intent and they were almost level 5 minutes in. Regent came forward with Ricky Griggs again forcing a save from Preston Edwards and the Resulting corner saw Josh Gould’s headed effort tipped over the bar.

With 20 minutes to go, Regent kept coming at the Dulwich goal, Matt Cripps got a shot away on the edge of the box which was parried out before being cleared and Ricky Griggs again went close as he forced another low save.

Dulwich might have killed the game off with 15 minutes to play when a free kick was awarded for a foul on Reise Allassani. Ashley Carew struck at goal only to be denied by a fine Harry Palmer save.

The game played out with Regent attempting to force an equaliser but this just wasn’t to be. FT 2-1

Overall a fantastic second half performance from Regent who showed that they are more then capable of competing with the likes of Dulwich Hamlet, who will certainly be in and amongst the Promotion places come the business end of the season.
