Brightlingsea Regent welcomed fellow title chasers AFC Hornchurch to North Road who looked to cut the host point advantage.
Webster made a few notable changes to his starting line up from Saturdays win over Haringey Borough. With Jake Turner missing and Tom Richardson out with an injury, George Doyle and Billy Hunt both started, skipper Matt Cripps come back into the side after completing his suspension allowing Connor Witherspoon to go back to his regular role in midfield.
AFC Hornchurch had the better of the early chances, Ross Wall won a free kick for the visitors on the edge of the area on the 4th minute, which was taken by Deadline day signing Sam Bantick, his effort was only partially cleared and Teddy Nesbitt hit his volley over the bar.
Bantick was involved in a move shortly after, when he took possession from a clearance and played in strike partner Martin Tuohy whose first time shot went narrowly over the bar.
Regent did however take the lead on in the 15th minute, with a defensive error from Hornchurch, Alex Bentley’s attempted clearance hit defender John Easterford with the loose ball finding its way to Billy Hunt, Billy sidestepped the defender to strike hard and powerful past Sam Mott in goal, whose best efforts couldn’t keep the ball out of the net! 1-0 Regent.
AFC Hornchurch did go close once more in the first half, When an Abs Saymour free kick was struck with venom and looked to be sneaking in under the crossbar but Regent keeper Sam Cowler did excellently to tip over. HT1-0
After an edgy start to the second half, the next real chance come the way of Regent. On the 60th Minute the R’s doubled the advantage. When Billy Hunt got the ball down and found Phil Kelly down the right channel, he went around Elliott Styles advancing to the edge of the box and let go a wonderful curling effort straight into the side of the net from a narrow angle, giving Mott no chance. 2-0!
It was nearly three for Regent shortly after, when Billy Hunt got himself in space down the left-hand side, he whipped in a delicious cross to meet Aaron Condon on the edge of the 6-yard box, but Mott was equal to it on this occasion.
With the game drawing to a close, AFC Hornchurch did manage to get themselves back into the contest, Alex Bentley crossed to meet the head of second half substitute Leon McKenzie, whose powerful header from 20 yards out went past Sam Cowler in goal for the R’s. 2-1
The goal urged AFC Hornchurch forward looking for an equaliser but Regent defended well to hold on and get the points. FT 2-1
Another superb display from Brightlingsea Regent, looking very good for the Championship now just needing 4 points from the next 4 matches. Next week we host Romford.
