A poor first half costs Regent as they suffer away defeat.

Brightlingsea Regent travelled to Dereham for their latest league game and a long midweek trip for the R's. Dereham had recorded a 7-0 win against Burnham Ramblers at home Saturday whilst Regent had picked up their first away win with a 3-2 victory at Waltham Abbey. The home side had a successful first season in the Ryman league last year finishing seventh after winning the Thurlow Nunn Premier division the season before and had started the season with a solid home record of 3 wins and 1 draw going into the game.
Webster was without TJ Amass and Amir Berkane due to injury but did welcome back skipper Warren Joseph and included Charlie Durling from the Under 18's side.
It was the hosts who furthermore improved their home record with a 2-1 victory, Dereham playing very well in the first half against a lacklustre Regent but the second half was almost the opposite with Regent working much harder and in the end just couldn't force an equaliser. A good crowd of 193 was treated to a very good game played in a great spirit and it must be said well handled by the Referee who allowed the game to flow throughout.
Dereham started the game well and were playing some really good football with great movement and good rotation through their players. Luke Avenell held well after 4 minutes with a stinging drive from the edge of the box, the home side took the lead after 9 minutes. Dereham winning the ball in midfield and breaking quickly and finding the number 11 who strode onto the ball with Jake Gould trying to close him down, he deftly lifted the ball over the advancing Regent keeper to make it 1-0. Regent were finding it hard to get into the game and hadn't really played any football but did find an outlet with Ben Newson and Russell Malton who had both forced corners from wide areas but these amounted to nothing. The home side were very much in control for the first 35 minutes and were moving the ball well but in large Regent did contain, the home side were afforded too much time and space on the ball. Regent did settle eventually and were moving the ball much better but after 37 minutes it was the home side once again who created a great chance, good football through midfield and the cross from the right found the home number 7 but as he was about to shoot he slipped and the effort scuffed up and away for a goal kick. As it looked like the R's had finally settled after a really poor 35 minutes and 1-0 down at half time would have been accepted they were sucker punched. Another quick break in injury time saw again the right back galloping forward and this time his cross was met by a good shot that Regent managed to block but the home side were first to react and fired home to make it 2-0. HT 2-0
The second half again followed the trend of the first half with the home side starting well and forcing two early corners. After 50 minutes though the R's finally started to exert pressure and were rewarded almost immediately forcing a corner after winning the ball high up the pitch. Ben Newson swinging in a good delivery which saw Jake Holman's header just cleared, Josh Gould first to the loose ball but his shot from 6 yards was straight at the keeper who was already strewn on his line. Again Regent were back in possession by more busy play and the combination of Phil Kelly and Russell Malton saw Phil Kelly force the keeper in to a full length diving save to concede a corner. Ben Newson again with the corner which was met by Jake Holman who powered home to make it 2-1. Almost immediately Regent had their equaliser when a superb pass from Ben Newson found Russell Malton through on goal but his shot was saved by the keeper. Regent again nearly handed the hosts a two goal lead when a quick throw out from Luke saw Josh caught on the ball but he did just enough to clear. The home side making substitutions to try and change the flow of the game and Webster too making his first change after 70 minutes with Ricky Griggs replacing Jake Turner. Regent were working really hard to deny any time and space and the home side were now having to rely on the counter attack and did break free but Luke Avenell saved comfortably from the edge of the area. Despite their improvement the R's couldn't find a way back in and Webster made his last two changes to try and force a draw with Sean Bartlett and Charlie Durling replacing Josh Gould and Luke Milbourne. Regent through Ben Newson and Ricky Griggs were finding space down the home sides left but despite this an equaliser couldn't be found and again the home side broke well but on this occasion the shot was fired wide. FT 2-1
A good game for the supporters to watch but frustration for Regent who after a sloppy first 50 minutes produced a much better last 40 to the game and went close to getting something from the game against a good Dereham Town. The lads now left to focus on the FA Cup tie on Saturday against London Tigers, the first time the club has made the First Qualifying round in their history.
