Regent go down 5-1 at Chatham

Brightlingsea Regent made the long midweek journey to Chatham Town for their latest league game looking to bounce back from the defeat on Saturday to Aveley. Their hosts Chatham Town had won 1, drawn 1 and lost 1 in their first three league games compared to Regent who had lost 2 and won 1. By the end of the game it was the hosts who had improved their record and points tally with a good display that on the night Regent had no answer to.
Webster was without Ben Newson for the game and Josh Gould was still not quite ready to return after injury but was named on the bench although unable to play as yet. Russell Malton was the only change to the side from Saturday replacing Ben, Jake Holman and Phil Kelly both returned to the squad and started on the bench.
The home side started well and pushed Regent back and straight away showed some real threat with a lively front three. After 8 minutes Chatham had the lead, the number 8 for the home side was afforded too much time and threaded a ball out to the winger who drove inside and played a ball into the box that was met and fired past Luke to make it 1-0. More good play out wide from the wide player looked as though it had added another goal especially to the abusive fan by the dugout who was celebrating by giving everybody a high 6 but it had hit the side netting. After 19 minutes the home side did add another goal though, more direct play out wide with the ball crossed into a good area and met by the same Chatham player to make it 2-0. Regent were reeling and tried to get a grip in the game but with the three forwards staying very high and the team struggling to get any telling possession they were finding it hard. The Regent cause was not helped when we gave away a sloppy goal, Luke playing out a pass looking to find TJ Amass but the ball was short and met first time by the Chatham player who first time curled the ball over Luke's head and into the top corner for an excellent finish and making it 3-0. Finally Regent were able to breach the home back line as Sean Bartlett was played in with a good pass down the outside of the centre back but as he looked to shoot he was challenged and the ball went out for a corner, Sean taking a nasty hit on his windpipe but after treatment was able to continue. Regent were having their best spell of the half and a corner played in saw the keeper flap at the ball but the home side were able to clear to safety. Just before the end of the half another good move down the left with Jake Gould and Russell Malton finding Terry Rymer but his shot was over the bar. HT 3-0
Regent started the half better but again it was the home side who were creating the better chances and Luke Avenell saved well saving low to his right. After 59 minutes the home side made it 4-0, a pass finding the number 10 who drove into the box holding off the Regent defender before firing past Luke and finding the bottom corner. After 62 minutes it was 5 when another direct run from the home number 10 saw him collide with Luke Avenell and Warren Joseph, the Referee deciding it was a penalty, from my angle it looked a harsh award, the number 10 stepped up and fired low for 5-0. Webster made all three changes and there was improvement with Regent finally able to have more control in the game and showing a lot of character in doing so. Russell Malton and Phil Kelly both working the keeper although both saves were very comfortable. A much better final half of the half for the R's and things to take into the game Saturday with the lads taking things on board and looking more organised and playing some good football. The lads were rewarded after 90 minutes with Ricky Griggs getting his third goal in four games, his cross was thwarted but he reacted quickest and jinked past defenders before striking into the far corner for a similar looking strike to the goal at Tilbury to make it 5-1.
FT 5-1
A tough night for Regent against a Chatham side who on this performance looked a very good side. All things to take on board and work on in time for the next game on Saturday.
