A weakened Regent win 3-2

We travelled to Debenham for our latest game with several players missing. Philbo was still out after having dental surgery, Sambo was ill, Morley was serving the last game of his 2 game ban and Gouldy was skiing. All this meant Peter Brough coming in for his first start in the 1st team and Baker starting with Warren moving in to midfield. We met early to arrive at the ground to watch the mighty Liverpoool smash Man U. The Bantabus, driven badly by Webster, got us all lost as he was concentrating on driving fast and reckless, rather than on where he was going. The pitch wasn’t in the best of shape but after a decent warm up and with some new faces we started well and began the better. After 15 minutes we nearly took the lead when we kept the ball alive after a corner and Rymer played a lovely ball through to Jake H who chipped the advancing keeper but was somehow denied by a superb clearance off the line. The home team shortly after took the lead when a direct ball was played in to the winger who held off Peter and Jake H before beating Sam to make it 1-0. They grew in confidence and exerted more pressure but Sam was in good form and came well to relieve the pressure from a couple of corners. Just before the half hour mark we equalised when Tevez was played in and from 20 yards with his new shiny yellow boots on he smashed in to the corner, beating the keeper to make it 1-1. Proper dodgy boots that had only lasted 15 minutes before splitting but they certainly knew where the onion bag was. The game continued rather evenly but just before half time tricky Griggsy beat 2 players before being brought down rather crudely in the box for a penalty. The penaly spot like the pitch wasn’t the best but Rymer stepped up and planted an unstoppable peno to make it 1-2. HT 1-2
A positive talk was met with a good start to the half but despite this the home team created a couple of chances from corners. Sambo produced 2 brilliant saves to deny them though. We were playing some good stuff with Griggsy causing some big problems and being brought down on 2 occasions just on the edge of the box. Rymer’s shot on target but comfortably saved by the keeper. After 20 minutes we added another goal after a decent corner from Griggsy was headed in by Tevez to make it 1-3. Minutes after we nearly added another but Hughesy’s header from Griggsy’s ball was saved superbly by their keeper. At this point Webster was starting to strip off, feeling that if we were 1-4 up he could make his Ridgeon’s debut in the hole.. Ha Ha. We then allowed the home team to gain a bit of momentum when a foul by Jake H on the edge of the box was punished. The skipper stepped up from 20 yards to find the bottom corner beating Sam to make it 2-3. Webster then made his one and only sub with Hilly coming on for Peter who had made a good debut. We played out the last 15 really well keeping the ball for at least 20 passes at one stage going from one side of the pitch to the other, which was no mean feat on this pitch. With almost the last kick, Clarky was played through but the keeper denied him twice. FT 2-3
A great performance from an under strength Regent which shows that team is always more important that individuals and what a good bunch of youngsters we have beneath the 1st team. The boys were looking forward to a nice shower, with Clarky especially hoping for something similar to a Herbal Essence advert. The showers were freezing though but the day was saved by Wallis who just happened to have a wrench in his kit bag. Webster was proud of the boys but I couldn’t help feeling a little sorry for him as he now owes a dirty pint, after Tom’s bet come through with a late Kuyt winner assisted by Carroll, he still persists in wearing those horrific boots and he got the Bantabus lost again on the way home.. HA HA.... #climbingthetable
