Prolific Brightlingsea Regent surged into Round Four of the BBC Essex Senior Cup as Tom Richardson’s hat-trick set-up a 5-2 win at Ryman North counterparts Aveley.

In what should prove to be Aveley’s final Essex Senior Cup tie at Mill Field, their home since 1951, with a construction of a new home at nearby Belhus Park well underway, the Millers may be pleased to see the back of the North Essex visitors.

Only three weeks ago joint-table-topping Regent came away with a 4-1 league victory before returning on a chilly evening to turn in another clinical showing. Sitting just a place outside the play-off positions, Aveley are enjoying a strong season themselves and scored early in both halves of this contest to first take the lead and then level as Regent were given a tough test before securing victory and a place in the last 16 of the competition

Just 3 minutes had elapsed when the hosts moved in front. Joseph Clark’s free kick was flicked into the path of Jeremiah Maja, who nudged home his first goal for the club from close range. However, Brightlingsea had scored 27 times in their previous seven fixtures and they hit back on 20 minutes from the penalty spot. Richardson’s run into the area was halted by Harry Gibbs and Richardson himself converted from twelve yards.

A good move by the home side saw Jordan Peart thread a pass through to Arian Retkoceri, but Regent goalkeeper Daniel Beeson did well to race off his line and gather at the winger’s feet. The visitors edged ahead with 29 played.

A goal kick from Aveley custodian Arron Omand was nodded forward by Regent’s Kieron Baker and Richardson raced through and slotted beyond the ‘keeper. The away side soon had chances to extend their lead.

Richardson’s angled shot was spilled by Omand, but the gloveman recovered well to grasp the ball at the second attempt ahead of Josh Gould before Richardson outmuscled Adalberto Pinto, firing an angled effort just wide of the far post. Harry McDonald then smashed just wide and George Doyle’s hugely deflected free kick dropped off-target but, within 18 seconds of the restart, Aveley grabbed an equaliser.

Gibbs’ low cross from the left-hand side found its way to Davidson Tejaiye, who poked home. Brightlingsea immediately responded, with McDonald striking a post from close range and Gould firing just over on the turn after a long set-piece from Ricky Griggs. The visitors restored their lead on 56 minutes courtesy of another spot-kick.

Again it was Richardson who was brought down, but this time by ‘keeper Omand on the edge of the area. Once more Richardson - an FA County Youth Cup winner with Essex Under 18s in 2012 - stroked into the net from the penalty spot to complete his trio.

The win was almost put beyond doubt when Brightlingsea added a fourth with nine minutes remaining. A centre from the right-hand side by Doyle evaded the home defence and McDonald tapped in at the near post. There was still time for the away side to add another, notching a fifth with the final action of the evening when Baker dispossessed Omand and rolled the ball into the net.
