Brightlingsea Regent win at Soham to progress in the Alan Turvey League Cup

Brightlingsea Regent and Soham Town Rangers met in the Alan Turvey League Cup on Saturday at Soham. The teams had brought the game forward from Tuesday with both teams out of the FA Cup. Webster made changes to the team after the disappointing midweek defeat at Dereham looking for a reaction and got what he wanted with a much more assured performance. Three unanswered goals for Regent as they booked their place in the next round and another away tie against either Needham Market or Heybridge Swifts.
Regent started the game well and took the lead on 6 minutes. A corner was cleared by the away side but only as far as Brendon Heath, he crossed the ball first time, the Soham defender handled as he looked to clear his lines again. The resulting free kick from 22 yards was delightfully bent into the top corner with the keeper rooted and unable to do anything, making it 0-1. Regent continued to make it hard for the home side working hard to deny them any time on the ball and made it 0-2 on 12 minutes. Again from a corner the home side cleared but the ball was returned first time into the area by Jake Gould, the goalkeeper came out but misjudged the flight of the ball and Josh Gould tapped in the ball into the unguarded net. The home side looked for a reaction and forced a corner of their own after a break down the right, the big centre half could only head wide though with Regent able to put enough pressure on the header. On 15 minutes Regent nearly added to their lead with a pass from Ricky Griggs finding the run of Phil Kelly, he cut inside the defender before seeing his shot clip the post and going behind for a goal kick. Midway through the half the home side began to settle better and tenacity from the striker who didn't give the ball up deep in the Regent area, he managed to wrestle the ball away from Josh Gould before crossing and the home player should have done better in the box but his volley was well over. Despite now having more possession the home side struggled to trouble Andrew Plummer and their best threat looked to be through set pieces although Regent dealt well with these. It was the R's who nearly added to the lead just before half time with a deflected Jake Turner shot just tipped onto the bar by the back peddling home keeper. Lamell Howell forced the keeper into another save as he broke into the box but his shot was smothered and cleared. HT 0-2
The home side started the half much better and arguably had their best spell as they pinned Regent back. They created their best chance on 54 minutes when a ball forward was slightly misjudged, the Soham winger reacting quickest to drive into the box but he could only hit his shot beyond Andrew Plummer but inches wide of the far post. Webster made his first change on 65 minutes with Jake Gordon replacing Phil Kelly. A good move and finish made it 0-3 on 68 minutes. Brendon Heath playing the ball to Lamell Howell who strode down the wing before beating the defender and cutting the cross back, Jake Gordon and Jake Turner both dummying the ball for Luke Read who from 20 yards controlled the moving ball into the top far corner for a lovely finish. Webster made his last two changes on 71 minutes with Josh Mayhew and George Clarke replacing Lamell Howell and Brendon Heath. Luke Read created the next chance for Regent with a sublime pass into the run of Jake Gordon but Jake chipped high over the advancing keeper and bar. Again it was Luke Read who broke up play before finding George Clarke, he weaved into the box but saw his shot saved by the keeper. Just before the end a good move found Josh Mayhew but his run and then shot was well saved by the home keeper. FT 0-3
A much more workman like performance by the R's who progress into the next round.
