A superb attacking display sees Regent progress in the League cup.

Brightlingsea Regent travelled to AFC Sudbury for the preliminary round of the Alan Turvey Cup (League Cup) The home side had a new playing surface installed during the close season and after last seasons third placed finish had started the season well winning all three games, their latest a 0-1 victory at Cheshunt FC. Regent however had a mixed bag with a win, draw and defeat. Both teams made three changes from their starting team Saturday with Webster resting Ricky Griggs from the squad and Jake Turner and Luke Milbourne reverted down to the bench. Harry Johnson making his first team debut and Kieron Baker coming in for his first start with Luke Read returning. The home side made three changes also with Berquez, Callendar and Blackwell rested, former Regent player Ollie Canfer lining up for the home side after his summer move.
The home team got off to the perfect start when after 3 minutes a cross from the right rose beyond Andrew Plummer into the far corner to make it 1-0. Despite the start Regent had begun well and both sides moved the ball well. Good play from Josh Mayhew found Jake Gordon but through on goal the home keeper Bowles made the first of his many one on one saves to smother the shot. Again both teams continued to play well and Sudbury earned a couple of consecutive corners with good build up play down the right, Andrew Plummer handling at the second opportunity to clear danger. Regent were threatening especially down the right and after 18 minutes got an equaliser, George Clarke laying off to Luke Read before being fouled, the Referee playing a good advantage with Luke striding on into the box and firing into the far corner for 1-1. Regent continued to look dangerous down the right and the home side shuffled their team and this had an affect with AFC Sudbury enjoying a good spell pinning Regent back with good possession football. The 10 for the home side working a good chance but his shot was dragged wide. Andrew Plummer then did well to clear the area with a punch from a corner. Just as it looked Regent were struggling to hold on George Clarke gave the R's the lead. Brendon Heath intercepting a loose pass before driving forward and passing to George, his positive touch took him beyond the defender and he fired past Bowles to make it 1-2 on 38 minutes. Just 3 minutes later Regent added another goal with another ball won in midfield before Luke Read broke forward and crossed into the box where Josh Mayhew slid home for 1-3. HT 1-3
Despite some good possession for the home side Regent carried the threat in the second half and created many chances with some scintillating play. George Clarke breaking forward with Jake Gordon before being denied when through by Bowles. Jake Gordon was next to be denied when he collected a pass from Josh Mayhew before beating Baker down the side but again Bowles smothered his shot. Webster made his first change on 62 minutes with Kieran Ayling replacing Josh Gould. George Clarke again going close before again being denied by the outstanding Bowles. Webster made his second change with the returning Russell Malton replacing Kieron Baker. Malts was straight into the play and his rasping effort was comfortably handled by Bowles. Kieran Ayling was then booked after a foul on the edge of the area but the resulting free kick was fired high over by substitute Parker. Webster made his final change with Jordan Barnett replacing Brendon Heath on 72 minutes. Regent were denied what looked a certain penalty when Jake Gordon was through on goal, Bowles racing out and flattening Gordon without getting the ball but amazingly the Ref awarded the home side a free kick in the area! A flowing move from back to front saw Jordan Barnett sweep the ball out to Josh Mayhew, his pass found George Clarke but again that man Bowles saved from inside the box. The home side had an effort from distance with the left back moving forward but Andrew Plummer saved comfortably. Regent got two goals in as many minutes which their play deserved with George Clarke striding forward and this time finishing well when poking past Bowles to make it 1-4 on 88 minutes. On 89 minutes Regent intercepted the ball before Jake Gordon chipped the advanced Bowles to make it 1-5. FT 1-5
A superb reaction and display from Regent who meet Soham away in the next round of the cup.
