Brightlingsea Regent produced a good performance to secure a passage through to the next round and another away trip.

Brightlingsea Regent faced Burnham Ramblers for the third time this season in the preliminary round of the FA trophy. It was a debut in the competition for the R's and the winners knowing they'd secure £2500 for their club and face an away tie in the next round versus Bedford Town or Chipstead. Webster was boosted by the return of Luke Milbourne who was only fit enough to take a place on the bench and also welcomed back Phil Kelly who returned from injury into the starting line up.
Regent started the game well and were on the front foot from the off with Phil Kelly causing early problems with his movement, good interplay through the Regent forward players and Phil Kelly saw his shot fired wide. Moments later more good link up play with Ricky Griggs passing to Michael Brothers who linked with Russell Malton who then found Phil Kelly, he drove forward before unleashing a great strike which the keeper did well to save at the expense of a corner. Great delivery from Ricky Griggs found Phil Kelly who's header beat the keeper to make it 0-1 after 7 minutes and a perfect start for Regent. The R's continued in the ascendancy and the home sides were finding it hard to get any grip in the game with Regent looking very threatening, Russell Malton seeing his stinging drive well saved. Good play through Michael Brothers and Russell Malton again found the dangerous Phil Kelly but on this occasion his shot was tame and easily handled by the keeper. The home side midway through the half looked to finally settle and forced a couple of set pieces where with good delivery they looked a threat but Regent defended well and cleared to safety. Regent increased their lead on 34 minutes which there first 25 minutes especially deserved, Jake Gould finding Ben Newson, Russell Malton's movement dragged out the home defence and created a huge space for Michael Brothers who collected the pass from Ben Newson before pinging his strike into the far corner for 0-2. A rather unsavoury incident before the end of the half with the Burnham number 9 letting himself down but unfortunately the Referee didn't see it so there were a few words said between the sides as they made there way off at the end of the half. HT 0-2
Once again Regent started well and put aside any complacency worries when after 48 minutes they increased their lead, Matt Cripps pinging a delightful ball to Ben Newson who had anticipated it better than the home defender and with Russell Malton in the box his perfect half volleyed cross was met by Russell who's header from 6 yards gave the keeper no chance to make it 0-3. Regent's movement and pace were troubling the home defence and Phil Kelly again broke through but this time his shot was wide of the target. Regent nearly increased their lead on 58 minutes, Josh Gould finding Phil Kelly who strode onto the ball and his stinging effort was well tipped onto the bar to deny Kelly. Webster made his first change after 67 minutes with Charlie Durling replacing Michael Brothers. Ben Newson made a direct run through and combined with Russell Malton but saw the keeper deny him but almost immediately after a direct pass found him and the after the defender missed the pass, Ben Newson made no mistake as he strode onto the ball before composing himself and sliding the ball past the home keeper for 0-4. Webster made his second and last change with Warren Joseph replacing Phil Kelly. On 83 minutes Regent made it 0-5, another good corner delivery was met by Josh Gould and his flicked header went to Jake Holman who's header was just beyond the despairing Burnham defender who couldn't clear away from the far post. With it looking like a hugely professional performance by the R's they conceded a consolation on 88 minutes, frustratingly, although it was a hell of a strike, Andrew Plummer who had managed a slight knock throughout the game with not too many problems stood no chance with a 25 yard strike whistling past him into the top corner to make it 1-5. FT 1-5
A good win and performance from Regent who take their place in the next round where they will face Bedford Town away on Saturday 1st November, they will also get a well deserved rest from games this week with the midweek home game against Romford now postponed as Romford are instead facing a FA Trophy replay after drawing on Saturday.
