Three sendings off and five goals in a ding dong FA Cup tie as Regent book their place in the next round.

Brightlingsea Regent made the trip to Royston in the FA Cup preliminary round and faced a tough game against Southern Central Division 1 side Royston Town. The Crows as they are known currently sit in 5th position in the table and are a good step 4 side as they proved on the day against the R's.
Webster welcomed all three recent signings into the eighteen man squad and gave a start to one of the signings with Amir Berkane slotting into midfield and Phil Kelly came into the starting line up replacing Russell Malton who was carrying a slight injury. The supporters saw a good game with plenty of incident and five goals, three sendings off and some really good football. Despite going down to 10 men and then 9 men the home side were in the tie right up till the last minute when Newson managed to head home to put Regent into the next round.
Both teams started well and the home side showed their intent early on playing from the back and in number 4 had the outstanding player on the day. Regent had also started well and were pressing the home team and were nearly rewarded early on when Ricky Griggs cut out a short pass but he couldn't sort his feet out and was only able to shoot wide. Phil Kelly then took a sore one when he leapt for a cross but the home keeper came and took ball and all.The home side worked the ball out wide and delivered a good ball into the box but Luke Avenell did well to claim. Clever play on the edge of the area from the home side saw a shot fizz just wide of the Regent post. After 21 minutes a big call for the Referee, a pass from Phil Kelly found Ricky Griggs who's slide rule pass was met by the well timed run of Ben Newson and as he looked to shoot he was brought down by the home number 6. The Referee awarding a penalty and sending off the number 6, Ben Newson stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 0-1. Regent put the home side under pressure and as Royston looked to organise it seemed like Regent could exploit this and go further ahead but despite good play around the edge of the area they couldn't find another goal. The Crows were still using the ball well and after the initial five minutes after the sending off they began to settle and pushed the R's back. Good play again saw a good delivery into the box and Regent were fortunate to scramble the ball away almost off the line. The home side were delivering some good set pieces and their variety of routines almost saw them find an equaliser but a good block and a header high over the bar again saw the Regent goal stay intact. Regent were finding it hard to get any rhythm despite their man advantage and the home side got a deserved equaliser, a well flighted free-kick with a minimal touch nestled into the far corner for 1-1. HT 1-1
Regent gave the ball away a couple of times at the beginning of the half and Webster made his first change bringing on Jermaine Osei for Josh Gould. With the home side still looking in reasonable control it was a little unlikely that it would be Regent who again took the lead but after 56 minutes that was the case. A long pass from Warren Joseph was allowed to bounce and a little nudge from Jermaine saw the ball fall into the path of Phil Kelly who headed home to make it 1-2, the home side appealing for a foul but the Referee waving away the appeals. Again though the home side showed what a good side they were and were straight back at Regent and after 58 minutes had another leveller. A good delivery from out wide found the number 4 who timed his run to ghost in and head past Luke to make it 2-2. Luke Avenell shortly after made a good save to deny the home side and then saw a goal disallowed as it looked like they would take the lead but the Referee saw an infringement by the home player. Webster then made a second change replacing Warren Joseph with TJ Amass coming on. After 66 minutes the home side were reduced to 9 men when the Referee produced a second yellow card for the number 11 after a foul on Phil Kelly. The home side still showed great character and despite the R's having more possession they still carried a threat as the game went end to end. After 75 minutes Phil Kelly was sent off, a ball found him on the edge of the area and the defender did well to deny him but as the ball bounced up Phil tried to win it and the Referee deemed it a red card offence to now make it 9 v 10. Amir Berkane and Jake Turner did well in the final phases to move the ball and try to find spaces against the 9 men who were now beginning to understandably tire but despite this they held their shape well and Regent couldn't find a way to create a really good chance. With it looking like a replay was on the cards Webster made one positive final change and brought off Amir who had impressed on his debut and on came Russell Malton. In the 90th minute Regent got a winner, a positive burst forward from Jake Gould saw the home side concede a corner and Matt Cripps flicked on to Ben Newson who's run to the back post was unopposed and he stooped low to head past the keeper and make it 2-3. Five or so minutes of injury time were played and Regent held on to book their place into the next round. FT 2-3
A really good cup tie between the sides and an excellent win for Regent against a very good Royston Town side who were hugely hospitable on the day. Best wishes to them for the remainder of their season, Regent will play London Tigers in the First Qualifying round away from home again after they defeated FC Clacton 2-0.
