Ricky Griggs scores the only goal to win Regent the cup!!

Regent capped off a wonderful season with a narrow victory against Gt Yarmouth. Regent started the game well and controlled the majority of the opening half with some good attacking football. Ricky Griggs had a mazy run before being brought down on the edge of the box after 5 minutes. Liam Whittaker took the resulting free kick and the Yarmouth keeper did well to finger tip over the bar. Jamie Clark also saw his shot well saved after good build up saw him get his shot away from the edge of he area. A corner resulted with Kevin Hughes seeing his header hacked away. Gt Yarmouth worked hard to gain a foothold in the game and looked to mainly play on the break. Terry Rymer hit the post midway through the half when he held the ball up before turning, beating 2 defenders and firing his shot against the post from 25 yards. Ricky Griggs again beat his defender this time out on the left but once again the resulting shot from Liam Whittaker was saved by the Yarmouth keeper. The Regent fans were doing their upmost to cheer the lads on with the local ale going down a treat by the sounds of some of them. Gt Yarmouth had 2 good chances before the end of the half with Daniel Beeson saving comfortably first time but on the 2nd occasion the lively forward held off Kevin Hughes but could only fire his left foot shot wide from a tight angle. HT 0-0
Gt Yarmouth started the 2nd half well and saw a great opportunity wasted when the striker blasted his shot wide when in a decent position. After 54 minutes Regent got what proved to be the winning goal, Jamie Clark's pass looked to be dealt with by the keeper 20 yards outside the left hand side of his area but Ricky Griggs put him under pressure and won the ball before holding the keeper off and beating a defender, he then curled his left footed shot from 35 yards in to the corner of the unguarded net for jubilant celebrations. Regent nearly increased their lead immediately after but Phil Kelly hit his shot straight at the keeper after getting played in on the left hand side of he box. After 70 minutes Regent produced move of the game but Liam Whittaker dwelt on his shot looking for a clearer chance and the defender blocked to deny him. Gt Yarmouth put more men forward in an attempt to get even and Dan Beeson saved superbly after 78 minutes but to no avail as the offside flag had already been raised. With 5 minutes of injury time being played Sam Holman nearly put the game to bed but his shot from 20 yards was plucked out of the top bins by the keeper. In their last attempt Yarmouth pumped a ball into the box but Regent cleared despite a shout for handball which was waved away by the Referee. FT 1-0
A good display by the lads against a hard working Gt Yarmouth Town who had again made life tough. A deserved win however on the balance of play and especially chances which caps off a wonderful season for Webster and the lads. Next season will see them play their football in the Premier Division so now is the time to enjoy what they've achieved and come back ready to work even harder to continue the clubs success.
