Regent travelled to Braintree Town Reserves knowing that a win would seal promotion to the Premier Division. Webster took a squad of 16 looking to avenge a league and cup defeat earlier in the season. The first exchanges were fairly even with both keepers making good saves. Dan Beeson came off his line to smother well after 15 minutes when the winger was through by the touchline. Sam Holman then saw his shot saved well twice by the home keeper to deny him. Jake Holman then looked to fire home at a corner after a neat turn and shot but the keeper somehow found a go gadget leg to poke around the post. After 25 minutes Regent did take the lead though when the industrious Jamie Clark won the ball in midfield before picking out an inch perfect pass to Phil Kelly who side footed home from 10 yards to make it 0-1. Regent were pinning the home side back now and putting them under lots of pressure and deservedly increased the lead after 40 minutes. Jake Gould made a positive run from full back and looked to have been seen out by the defender but Jake not happy with this out muscled him and picked out Liam Whittaker from the by line, Liam Whittaker again showed great composure and nonchalantly side footed into the bottom corner to make it 0-2. HT 0-2
The home side as expected came out and looked to find a way back in the game but Regent defended well and when they did breach the line Dan Beeson saved well tipping a shot around the post. Regent created a great chance after 55 minutes when again the marauding Jake Gould crossed but Terry Rymer was inches wide with his effort at the near post. Midway through the half Terry Rymer was played through and was one on one with the keeper but again his effort was just wide. With the home side commiting more men forward it left more gaps and Ricky Griggs then missed a great chance from 15 yards to make the game safe when he blazed over. Phil Kelly was then denied what looked like a stonewall penalty when he was brought down in the box. Braintree had one last chance to get back in the game in injury time after Scott Page could only clear his header from a corner to the home winger but he blasted high and wide. FT 0-2
A deserved win against a good side which once again shows how far the lads have come since the beginning of the season. Much celebrations after with a good few sore heads I reckon but I settled for a lovely cup of tea. So promotion secured and with 3 games still to play and the top 3 still to be decided, a cup final also, still plenty to play for.
