Brightlingsea made the long journey to Downham on Saturday for our latest league game. Webster had Jake Gould, Warren Joseph and Ryan Salter returning after injury and illness, all this meant a start place for Jake Gould and Terry Rymer. The pitch wasn't the best of pitches but despite this Regent dominated the half playing their normal style of football with the home side sitting deep and hoping to counter attack. Despite complete domination Brightlingsea couldn't find a way through with Phil Kelly going close on three separate occasions after beating his defender but each shot was inches wide of the far post. Ricky Griggs was also having lots of joy so much so the home side made an early sub due to an injury apparently! Ricky had a very good chance after 30 minutes but when through his chip was wide. With injury time being played we had our best chance from a Ricky Griggs corner which was hung up for Kieron Baker who's knock back found Liam Whittaker but from inside the 6 yard box his feint touch was straight at the keeper. HT 0-0
In the second half we carried on in the same manner but with a bit more tempo and after huffing and puffing we finally found a way through. After 70 minutes Phil Kelly again got to the byline and crossed to Liam Whittaker who set it back for Charlie Thompson who arrowed his left foot shot in to the bottom corner to make it 0-1. This finally made the home side have to come out and have a bit more of a go but twice it was Regent who should have increased their lead. Liam Whittaker put his header straight at the keeper after good work out wide from Phil and Kieron. Webster made his first change with Jamie Clark replacing Liam Whittaker. Terry Rymer then saw his shot from 10 yards tipped round the post from the keeper. Downham had their best chance after 80 minutes but Jamie Clark tracked the runner superbly and got in a last ditch tackle just as the number 8 was bearing through on goal. Warren Joseph replaced Charlie Thompson with 7 minutes to go and playing injury time it looked like Regent had collected a 0-1 away win but Downham who worked hard all game never gave up and got an equaliser. A corner was swung in and the number 2 headed powerfully home to make it 1-1 with their first effort on target. FT 1-1
A sucker punch at the end after a one sided game in which the home team worked very hard, a cruel lesson for Regent which shows if you don't take your chances and no matter how dominant you are you must play the 90 +. Our next game is away to Stowmarket on Tuesday, a quick chance for the lads to put it right.
