A single goal from Liam Whittaker was enough to see Regent in to the 2nd round of the FA Vase.

On Saturday we travelled to Whitton Utd for arguably one of the biggest games in the clubs recent history in the first round of the FA Vase. We had a full squad available with Moysey also now fit and ready to play but after last week’s good performance and result, Webster stuck with the same 11. There was a struggle with the kit though and club Captain/gimp, Warren made a right mug of himself as usual but not because of his boring banter for a change. The poor little gimp had a little ladder in his socks and normally when this happens to his stockings he gets a brand new pair but despite crying “Jamie I need some different socks” he had to make do, although he did say his going to tell Jamie’s Mummy. There were a few more fines for the tin with Morley driving like Miss Daisy down the motorway making him late. Pagey was late, shock but he had a good reason, Dover was round his giving him a present for his newborn son Frankie. Webster had transmitted his garish rascal clothing on the lads though which meant the boys running out in their new purple shirts, errrr. Despite this we started the game well and took the lead after 9 minutes when after some good build up play through midfield, Sam Holman fed a ball through to Liam Whittaker whose run and touch took him past the centre back before slipping the ball under the on rushing keeper to make 0-1. Shortly after we went close with Kev finding Philbo but the keeper was alert and just cleared. Another good pass and run from Clarky saw him in space in the box but after a good first touch his volley was high. After 25 minutes Clarky again was involved when another good first touch saw him driving through the midfield but the centre half came to meet him, he was a little reckless and caught Clarky with both feet. The Ref had little option but to send him off. For the next 10 minutes this seemed to affect us more than the home side and Beeson was called in to action with a good finger tip save around the post. We did settle though and kept the ball as we should and gained more possession for the last part of the half. HT 0-1
We came out 2nd half and for the first part nearly increased our lead when Pagey hit the post before it was scrambled clear. The home side to their credit worked really hard and made a game of it but in truth their best threat came from a set piece. A good ball was played in but the back heeled effort was cleared to safety. We created another golden chance when Pagey was played in but his shot when one on one was just wide. FT 0-1
The draw for the 2nd round is on Monday and will be posted on here. A second clean sheet was very pleasing and we controlled the game without being at our best in the 2nd half but a good result against what is always a tough game at Whitton.
