On Saturday we welcomed Team Bury to North Road looking to bounce back from the disappointment of our FA Vase exit. Webster was back in the dugout and had Kev Hughes and Warren Joseph returning and new signing Julian Simon-Parson in the squad. Liam Morlley and Kev Hughes came in to the starting line up replacing Scott Page who dropped to the bench and Joe Ellul. The first half was a bit of a damp squib with the ball being knocked about ok but at no tempo so not the best to watch for the few supporters who had braved the weather. Despite this we created 2 very good chances with Ricky Griggs being played through but his effort was smashed over the bar. Jamie Clark and Phil Kelly combined well down the right and Jamie's cross was perfect for Sam Holman but again his effort was over the bar as he mis-timed his header. Dan Beeson was forced in to action and saved well from the forward from 8 yards. HT 0-0
After a good chat the players responded brilliantly and came out with much better intensity and should have taken the lead after 2 minutes but Phil Kelly shot straight at the keeper from inside the 6 yard box. Sam Holman then saw his scuffed shot cleared from 10 yards. Jake Gould and Ricky Griggs were combining well and these 2 players created the goal after 60 minutes with Jake finding Ricky whose mazy run saw him upended in the box. Jamie Clark stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to make it 1-0. In total control we made a calamitous error to allow the away side a lifeline after 68 minutes. From our throw in their half we threw back to Kev but the throw didn't reach and the number 9 was alive and nipped in front of Kev before running half the length of the pitch. Kev brought down the 9 but the initial contact looked outside the box but the Referee was in no doubt and awarded the games second penalty, again the player sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 1-1. The away keeper then tipped a superb Phil Kelly shot on to the bar and shortly after Phil's cross was headed over by Ricky. Webster then made positive changes and this brought a change of shape and the winning goal. Team Bury went close on the break but the shot from 8 yards was wide when he was placed to do better. With 85 minutes on the clock the combination of Gould and Griggs again gained us the important 3 points. Jake making another good run before passing to Ricky who jinked past the full back before his cross shot beat the keeper and nestled in the corner to make it 2-1. FT 2-1
It wasn't a classic performance but after the disappointment of last week it was still a good reaction by the lads and deserved to still win the game.
So it was team night out and skipper Warren had got the mini bus booked and off to Cambridge for the night with 15 going it was always gonna be a messy night. Pagey absolutely smashed the dirty pint with Whits dink coming in second and Ricky Griggs third and needing about 5 minutes to finish, poor attempt! The fine tin was up to nearly £200 for drinks despite Warren never paying any fines himself. Few states by the end with Whits dink suffering on the way back.. The shortened match reports of our games will now appear in the Green un pullout in the Eastern Daily Times on a Monday or online...
