On Saturday we travelled to unbeaten Saffron Walden Town. Webster was away on holiday sunning himself round the pool with his mankini on and north face rascal boots. In his place Warren brought the bad banter phoning us to pretend he’d forgotten the kit!! Ha ha, what a joker. We welcomed Dan Beeson back in between the sticks and Danny Clements came in to the starting line up after signing from Stanway Rovers. Sam Holman and Ryan Salter also came back in to the starting line up with a strong looking bench again. Liam Morley was unavailable due to a knock in the week so came in to the dugout to help out. The game was barely 5 minutes old when the home team were down to 10 men. The number 8, raising his hands to Pagey, the Referee produced a red card. The home side were clearly incensed by this and spent the next 85 minutes in his ear but all credit to him; I actually thought he had a very solid game but could also see their point of view, technically though it was a sending off. It took us 10 minutes to settle after this but when we did we knocked the ball around and looked to take advantage of the extra man. Our first chance coming from a corner but Kev was just unable to connect and it was cleared to safety. The home side were working hard and looking to hit us on the break, we were in control but moving the ball a little too slowly for my liking. A cross from Warren was then met by Pagey but the keeper not for the first time in the game would frustrate us with a good save. Ricky was shortly after played through but at an angle the keeper came out and saved well. We then hit the bar after another Pagey header. With 5 minutes off the half to go the home side took the lead against the run of play. The left winger shanked a cross which looped over Beeson and in to the far corner giving him no chance 1-0. HT 1-0
We made a change at half time with Liam Whittaker coming on for Wallis but it was the home side who started better and Beeson produced 2 top saves to stop us falling further behind. After 10 minutes Danny was replaced by Clarky after receiving a knock. After 15 minutes the keeper produced his best save with the faintest of touches to push it on the bar to deny Ricky Griggs scoring from a 15 yard volley. With 22 minutes to go we made our last change with Tevez coming on for Griggsy and another change of shape to try and force at least an equaliser. We huffed and puffed but the home team were staying compact and making it hard for us and even when we managed to beat the keeper, the woodwork saved them again with Pagey’s header this time hitting the post before being cleared. Liam then had an effort but his shot was fired over. With less than a minute on the clock Tevez was played through but the keeper came out and blocked his shot to deny us once again. FT 1-0
Another frustrating watch for the Regent but the hard work will continue at training. Keep the faith Regents!
