A good performance but no points.

On Tuesday night we travelled to Whitton United hoping to get our season back up and running. We welcomed back Philbo, Ricky Griggs, Pagey and Clarky in to the squad. After the disappointing 2nd half performance and in some cases attitudes Webster made a few changes to the team and we got the response we wanted. After 5 minutes and a very good start we took the lead. A powerful run through midfield from Sam Holman saw his shot well saved by the keeper but Pagey followed up and finished to make it 0-1. There was a quick consultation between the Referee and Assistant Ref with the Assistant confirming it was over the line. We were causing some real problems to the home defence and after another good run through midfield, this time by Philbo we were unlucky not to increase our lead. His dipping shot from 25 yards had the keeper beaten all ends up but smashed against the bar. Philbo then played through Pagey but his shot went under the keeper, who had just done enough and his defenders cleared off the line despite Tevez trying to ram home. Tevez and Pagey were causing problems but this time when through it was Tevez who missed the target. Tevez was then targeted and received a couple of naughty tackles and also during these incidents received a yellow card. After a corner and a bit of scramble Jake Holman had his shot cleared before Kev also saw his shot blocked. After 38 minutes and completely against the run of play the home side got an equaliser. A cross from the left was headed home by the unfortunate Kev Hughes whose diving header gave Griggsy no chance to make it 1-1. Minutes after though, Griggsy produced a finger tip save to deny an unlikely lead for the home side. HT 1-1
Straight from the kick off a defensive mistake saw Tevez round the keeper but his shot somehow hit the side netting. After 10 minutes we made a change with Tevez unable to continue after some rough treatment, in his place came Rymer. The home side took the lead after 20 minutes when a free kick was swung in, Griggsy couldn’t hold on and the Whitton player tapped home to make it 2-1. We tried to find an equaliser but again were unlucky when Rymer’s 30 yard effort beat the keeper but not the post and rolled across the line and clear to safety. With 15 minutes to go Whitton made it 3-1 after a sublime finish from 18 yards bent in to the top bins. We made the final two changes and went close again but couldn’t find a way back in to the game. FT 3-1
