With no league game this weekend we arranged a friendly fixture away at Long Melford. It gave us a chance to look at DJ Quiney at centre half and with both keepers deciding for various reasons to do one, we had Ryan Salter in goal. After a long absence with a hamstring injury,Salter was happy to deputise, despite being a centre midfielder normally. Special mention must go to skipper Warren who was actually early, he had managed to get his little Mr Bean body there and behave like a skipper. We started the game reasonably well and Griggsy, Hilly, Philbo and Rymer, looked sharp from the off and caused problems early doors. It was therefore no surprise when we took the lead after 10 minutes, Philbo teasing a ball across for Rymer to finish to make it 0-1. The home side were playing quite direct and there were times when we could have defended better. After 25 minutes the home side equalised, when a cross from their right was finished with aplomb to make it 1-1. After 30 minutes we regained the lead with a quickly taken corner from Hilly, he played to Griggsy, whose cross was tapped in by Philbo to make it 1-2. The Referee had little control and seemed happy to take his money but mince about the pitch allowing players to do what they want, which saw both teams committing niggly fouls. It was no surprise that there were a few handbags on the way back to the changing rooms but thankfully it was all calmed down quickly. HT 1-2
We started the 2nd half well again and for the first 15 minutes controlled the game with Rymer adding another goal after a good through ball was met by a decent run from Rymer, who chipped the advancing keeper to make it 1-3. The home side once again came back and we rather settled for what we had with Melford missing a couple of good chances from less than 6 yards. We did create a couple of other chances with the home keeper making a great save to deny Clarky. With injury time being played the home side made it 2-3 when Salter was caught in no man’s land and chipped. FT 2-3
A fairly decent workout to keep the boys ticking over and it also allowed Webster to catch up with his football friend and talk about their upcoming “Britain’s Got Talent “dance routine, see picture. After the game I was man handled by Wallis after emptying out the water bottles in the showers, which resulted in me screaming like a girl, “ my wallet, my wallet” It did stop me getting too wet though, so not a bad tactic. The Lino clearly not as camp as the Ref decided to try and put one on Tash but she politely declined, Ha Ha. It was off to KFC for the coldest, slowest bit of fast food ever but some decent banter.
