For the third season on the trot the Under 18s travelled to Cornard United for their first game of the season.

After two defeats in previous seasons a point away from home was a positive result but the lads will be disappointed not to take all three points on the night.

It was Cornard that started the brighter of the two sides, their best opportunity coming as the ball dropped to their striker six yards, however the shot was struck straight at Dillon O’Connor in the Brightlingsea goal who was excellent all evening on his debut.

Brightlingsea’s best chances of the first half fell first to Rocha Fosker who’s shot was deflected wide and Scott Cannon who couldn’t get a shot away when in a good position.

The U18s did also hit the bar from a corner but somehow the ball didn’t find the back of the net.

Unfortunately we did pick up a few injuries on the night. This led to Shay Broomhall and Morgan Hatch making their debuts.

Both did very well on the night and it was Shay that could have opened the scoring in the second half as he was put through one on one with the keeper, the keeper made a very good save diving to his right.

Rocha Fosker who covered so much ground on the night shot over the bar from close range and Cameron Ismail’s shot was too close to the keeper when in a good position and Alex Akinola shot wide after being put clear by Tom Dunningham.

Cornard always looked dangerous from set pieces and Dillon was called into action twice in the second half to ensure we kept a clean sheet.

The positives from the match were firstly the new players making their debuts and of course the clean sheet.

Thank you to Cornard United for your Hospitality on the evening and good luck for the season.

Next week we are back in action at home to FC Clacton on Thursday 17th August 7.45 Kick Off. All support very welcome.
